I travel around the shops this weekend, looking for my first items of baby clothes. I don’t know the sex of the baby yet, so were looking for neutral unisex clothes..I don’t know about anyone else, but I think a newborn just looks beautiful in white. So searching down the isles, hooks upon hooks of blue and pink, but no white to be seen.I ask the lady filling up the rack next to me ‘excuse me, could you show me where your unisex baby clothes are please’ she obliges and shows me to a small section, there, in between the mass of colour, 9 hooks dedicated to neutral baby clothes, 2 of which were still designed for a girl. I left empty handed and went onto the next shop, I came across the same problem over and over again. After 4 shops, not a single carrier bag in hand, I went home.

My partner suggested ‘why not try the Internet instead’ so I loaded up a couple of sites, again I was met with a dead end, most of these sites didn’t even give you the option to search for unisex baby clothes, you had to search through the mass of pink and blue to find the few neutral outfits they did have, which was few and far between.

It got me thinking, why? Do so many people find out the sex of their babies these days that specific gender clothes sell so well, does demand for neutral clothes no longer exist?

What about people like me that just love a newborn in white clothes, what about the parents that decide they want a surprise, what to do they do? The last thing you want to be doing after delivering a 8lb newborn into the world is to go clothes shopping in a busy shop looking for colours.

All I know is, this baby better not have it’s legs crossed in 2 weeks time at our next scan, because at this rate, they will have no clothes to wear.
