Adam Corbett Goes Back to Basics

Adam Corbett goes back to basics

West Bromwich’s Adam Corbett is going back to basics to get himself ready for his professional debut at Walsall Town Hall next week.

The light heavyweight punches pay for the first time on June 4 in the first time he has competed inside a ring for the best part of five years, last boxing for Wednesbury ABC as an amateur.

Corbett came back to the sport in the New Year and opted to turn pro rather than go back to the unpaid ranks, where he won five out of six fights.

The 26-year-old will be in with Doncaster’s James Tucker, a tough and durable journeyman who has only ever been stopped twice in 44 contests.

And the Black Country boxer admits he has been in the inenviable position of blowing off the ring rust in training, after a long period on the sidelines.

But Corbett – an electrician by day – insists he has finally got his spark back in the gym and is confident of carrying his skills into fight night.

He said: “It’s like starting from sctatch, I have picked up things again as I have gone along and there’s lots to work on, but I feel ready.

“I have done plenty of sparring with a lot of good fighters who have had plenty of experience, so I have got a good gage of what level I am at.

“I have adapted, now I want to get my head down and see where it takes me. There’s plenty of good fighters at my weight, but I don’t think it’s one of the toughest divisions.”
