Poomsae is a technical factor of taekwondo like Kyorugi (Sparring) required both to Dan and Kup grading. Poomsae or Patterns are a set sequence of movements that comprises of the respective rudimentary stances, blocks, punches and kicks logically arranged in a significant order in response to attacks from multiple imaginative assailants.

WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) started Poomsae world championships in 2006. These competitions focus on displaying patterns and judging the displays. Most taekwondo instructor endorse this new type of contest believing it promotes taekwondo and gives more probabilities for competition. I ought to say I disagree and genuinely have a dissimilar opinion on this matter.

I have always viewed Poomsae as the “martial art” portion of taekwondo due to it is focus on technique, stance and flow of performance. Actually I believe taekwondo competitions are tournaments with fights where the development is dynamic and the confrontation is not mechanical at all. Poomsae competitions are based more on showing off, the requisites to win are different. In order for the referee to award you ‘the win’ you have to make the technique look good, in truth better than your competitors. In this light I believe that Poomsae competitions may have the damaging effect of making practitioners forget the practical application of the sport.

There are other draw-backs to the emergence of Poomsae competitions as well, for one thing the cost to send students to both Sparring and Poomsae competitions increments their overall expenses. No proof has yet convinced me that the participation to such competitions may warrant the increase in costs plainly because taekwondo schools are not precisely meant to manufacture big cash-flows.

Regarding the audience I cannot say that Poomsae competitions are actually that stimulating to watch not to mention they don’t even compare to regular taekwondo competitions that may actually draw crowds. The current scheme on which Poomsae competitions function genuinely doesn’t aid this aspect at all. Finally another major fault of Poomsae competitions is the number of categories and champions. It complicates things not only for the newly emerged type of taekwondo contest but for taekwondo in general as well.

Unfortunately I can not offer an all encompassing solution, as the matter is to far innovative in order to do very much now. I personally feel that person schools ought to determine which way to go and focus on that area of taekwondo.
