Karate Uniform White

While the study of karate has been practiced for centuries, the modern karate uniform (karategi) is a comparatively new creation. The effortlessly recognizable uniform may trace it is roots to Master Kigoro Kano, founder of Kodo-kan Judo in the late 19th century. The karategi is an adaptation of the uniform designed by Kano.

The usual karategi is made from a white cotton canvas material. The thickness of the material may vary greatly, but uniforms made from at least 10-14oz cotton canvas are recommended. The heavier material is better suitable to the rigors and strains affiliated with karate training. It is likewise much more effective at absorbing perspiration, helping to maintain a cooler body temperature for the duration of training sessions.

Karate uniforms are made of three pieces of apparel; a jacket, pants and a belt. The jacket (Uwa-gi) and pants (Zubon) are designed to be comfortable and loose fitting to accommodate a high level of movement. The belt (Obi) is worn both as a symbol of rank, and to aid keep the jacket closed.

There are two mutual types of karategi; conventional cut and tournament cut. A conventional cut karate uniform is designed to reach all the way to the ends of the arms and legs. A tournament cut uniform is designed to leave the forearms and the much of the shin exposed.
