Held Stop Watch

In my quest to lose those not wanted pounds and regain my once athletic body or at least be capable to look down and see my toes without bending over; I decisive to take up jogging. After all, I was once a track star on the Track Team in high school even altho that was thirty five years and 40 pounds ago. I knew with a little sweat and persistent determination I could regain my speed and reawaken my somewhat dormant muscles.

I got a pair of good running shoes, running shorts and a stop watch with the heart monitor and all the other whistles and bells. The introductory day I intended to go out when it comes to a mile. This would be my warm up and then I would jog a slow easy 30 minutes and come back to the house. I made it down to the corner which is when it comes to two houses away before I had a severe stitch in my side and my knees were kind of rubbery. I decisive that was sufficient for the firstborn day.

Over time I was competent to go further distances and pushed myself like years of old. Being a weekend warrior and old track star I could push myself beyond the pain. I noticed that my heart monitor watch had an alarm that kept going off and when I looked at it I noticed the reading said over the limit that I had set. After all; no pain no gain. Right, perhaps not so much. I’ll tell you more with regards to this later.

After running and jogging for various months I decisive to enter a half marathon that was being held. No short 10-Ks for this warrior. Let the little girly boys run those short runs; I was going to go the distance to lose the extra weight and regain my glory days.

As the time for the half marathon came close I ratcheted up my training regimen. I ran closely each evening and pushed myself faster; laughing and snickering at the alarm because I was genuinely pushing myself to new levels. I noticed that regarding 7 miles I would get a catch in my knee (an old ski injury) but after a mile of the uncomfortableness the pain would subside. Armed with this cognition I felt I was ready for the race.

The day of the half marathon I was ready. The crowd that was taking part was amazing, the weather was fantastic and I just knew this day would be great.

I started that race somewhat close to the front of the pack but soon lost the ecstasy of being at the front because everyone was blazing past me. After a while I found my rhythm and pace and maintained my speed passing a few and being passed by a heap of but I knew that I could finish. Maybe I wouldn’t finish basi for the race but at least original for my age bracket.

As I neared the dreaded 7 mile marker I felt my knee cramp up, that pain was severe but I knew I could push through and would make it to the finish line. About that time a little old lady came jogging up besides me. I thought she was a volunteer from the water station and she ought to have noticed my grimace of pain.

She asked me how I was doing.

I replied that I was going to make it; I said I normally get a hitch in my knee at this distance but I thought I would work through it.

She then told me to hang in there sonny because I only had 5 more miles to go. She then ran past me like I was standing still.

It was then that I realized she wasn’t a volunteer; she was in the race! I thought well you old biddy! No old lady is going to leave me in the dust! I tried to catch her but after a mile I gave up and decisive just to finish my race. I couldn’t even get close sufficient to throw something at her! My ego was bent but I knew I would finish the race.

I did finish! I didn’t finish near the front; I was way back and didn’t win firstborn in my age bracket, I was way back.

There was a solace in that the little old lady that passed me won original in her age bracket. Her age bracket was the “Over 70 year old” bracket. The run sponsor had a free beer stand so when I saw how old she was I decisive to have a beer! This didn’t do much for my program but it made me feel better.

Later I found out from my doctor that I was a very lucky boy! My heart monitor was telling me that my heart rate was higher than it ought to be. We are not supposed to push our heart past the limits to promote healthful hearts. That rate is lower than your greatest or most complete or best possible heart rate which is calculated by subtracting your age from 220. Simple sufficient right? This noesis needs to come before you get started your quest for better health not after you make a dangerous mistake.

The morals of my story are several:

1. Study and learn the rectify way to get into shape.

2. Get a heart monitor and learn how to use it and compensate attention to it.

3. Beware of little old ladies. They may not be as nice as you think and they may embarrass you!

It took my kids a long time before they let me forget that little old lady.
