There are so a lot of treatments available to support snorers (and their long-suffering partners) in their quest for a silent night. For some, merely making a few life style changes will sort the problem. These include losing weight, drinking less alcohol, avoiding sedative medication where possible, stopping smoking and avoiding late meals. Other treatments range from particularly designed pillows to the more dubious, such as herbal and homeopathic remedies, hypnotherapy and will power.

There are a number of anti snoring aides that are proving victorious in the fight versus snoring. One such device is the anti snoring mouthpiece. Originally the brainchild of a dentist, the anti snoring mouthpiece (correctly termed mandibular progression device) has genuinely proven itself in the treatment of snoring. The upper and lower trays of the mouthpiece prevent the soft tissues of the throat (mainly tongue and soft palate) from collapsing down onto each other and obstructing the airway. They also move the lower jaw (mandible) forward which opens up the airway, thereby reducing turbulent airflow around the soft tissues of the throat, dramatically reducing vibration.

Some mouthpieces are designed to be heated up and moulded (known as boil and bite), similar to a sports gum shield. Other widgets require fitting by a dentist or require a mould to be taken of the inside of your mouth.

Mandibular progress widgets are not suitable for sufferers of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, those with insufficient teeth to aid the device, or periodontal difficultnesses likely to cause tooth mobility. If in any doubt, please consult your dental surgeon or medical examiner.

Dental and medical examinations at regular intervals are important for the duration of long-term treatment to refrain from potential averse effects and to assure continued effectiveness.
